Italy – Piedmont – Orta
from €250,00 per person
The village of Orta San Giulio with its "enchanted lake" is part of the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy. In the city center is Piazza Motta, a real lounge overlooking the lake, surrounded by rich town houses in different styles and decorated with wrought iron by arcades and horse chestnuts, but also by shopping and entertainment: the visitor can go to the search wrought iron objects and have lunch in the taverns where you can taste the typical cuisine based on rice and wine. From here boats depart to the island of San Giulio. A small island now inhabited only by a few nuns, a very well known place for the silence that reigns there, as well as for the legends that you are dwelling. There is only one way on the island, a ring road that is two paths, if traversed in one direction is called the way of silence, while in the opposite direction is called the path of meditation. Here stands the Palace of the Bishops and the bell tower of the Basilica of San Giulio, which emerges between water and sky, surrounded by old houses of fishermen and craftsmen, often by the medieval foundations, and stately villas with gardens overlooking the lake. From “Borgo Orta” can be reached in less than fifteen minutes, the Sacro Monte of Orta, one of the most picturesque places "in the world" according to Nietzsche. It was designed in 1591 and dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi: the Special Nature Reserve which is home includes beech, lime trees and pines. At the top, about 400 meters above sea level, after a run of 20 chapels containing 376 terracotta statues illustrating the life of the saint, it is the Church of St. Nicholas. The complex includes frescoes by Morazzone, Della Rovere, Nuvolone, Legnanino, Cantalupi.
